25 Facts About Sharks

#20 – Laying Eggs vs. Not Laying Eggs

There are two types of sharks when it comes to how they give birth to their young. The first type is the oviparous sharks. These sharks lay eggs. The second type is the viviparous sharks. Viviparous sharks give birth to live young sharks. What’s interesting about these viviparous sharks is that some of them carry their young in placenta, just like women do.

Embryos of sharks which develop in a placenta-like structure get nutrition directly from their momma shark. That means if the momma shark eats a human, her baby will also taste a little bit of the human flesh.
